Food safety is an emerging discipline and has gained much importance since the enactment of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which came into force in 2011. The enforcement of the act has created a good demand for the qualified food safety professionals in various areas like food processing, food testing, food safety, food regulation, auditing, risk management, capacity building etc. This M.Sc in Food Safety and Quality Management programme is offered to produce well qualified and competent human resource in the food safety sector in a large scale to meet the demand for the food safety professional of the country.
The programme has theory, practical, project work, and dissertation as components.
A special feature of this programme is that this is a modular programme having exit option for learners (after successful completion of 1st year) with PG Diploma in Food Safety and Quality Management (PGDFSQM) and lateral entry option for the PGDFSQM diploma holders directly to the second year of the M. Sc.
Objective:
- To develop qualified and competent human resource in the field of the food safety and quality management for regulators, industry, academic/research institutions, certifying and accreditation bodies, food trade, food testing and training
- To delve in depth on various aspects of food safety and quality management i.e. food standards, harmonization with global benchmarks, quality management systems, food analysis, instrumentation, risk analysis / management, traceability and auditing to transform the food ecosystem
- To nurture a positive and disciplined food safety culture among the professionals
- To conduct research studies on emerging food safety issues and formulation of science based regulatory framework.

Target Group:
The Graduates and Post Graduates in Chemistry/ Bio-chemistry or Microbiology; Agriculture/ Food Science/ Food Technology/Food and Nutrition/Engineering having chemistry and microbiology subjects/ Post Harvest Technology/ Home Science/ Life Science/Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Horticulture/ Dairy Technology/ Veterinary/ Fisheries/ Medical/ Dental Sc./ Nursing/BAMS/ BHMS/ Hotel Management and Catering/ Hospitality Management. It is also intended for professionals in food processing and quality control for strengthening their proficiency in design and implement quality management systems, undertake food auditing and implement new food act- Food Safety and Standard Act 2006. The programme shall also open new vista for entrepreneurs who intend to diversify in food safety and quality aspects.
Counselling Sessions:
The programme has theory, practical, seminar and dissertation component. The counselling sessions for the theory and practical are held at the study centres (usually during weekends) according to the schedule drawn by the programme-in-charge. The details of the study centre can be obtained from the IGNOU website or concerned regional centres. 75% attendance in the practical counselling session is compulsory to appear in the practical examinations. Attending theory counselling is not compulsory.
