Dr Moumita Das

Assistant Director

Dr. Moumita Das is Assistant Director at the National Centre for Innovation in Distance Education, IGNOU. She has been nominated as the Convener of the Institute’s Innovation Council (IIC) at IGNOU. The IIC is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, under its Innovation Cell (MIC), a Government of India initiative to shape the innovation ecosystem in the higher education institutions. She is one of the founder members of the InnovationClub@IGNOU - an initiative by IGNOU to foster a culture of innovation in the University, and has been its coordinator from 2016 to 2018. She organized several brainstorming and ideation sessions, talks, seminars and workshops in the Innovation Club. During this time the club expanded to the Regional Centres (RCs) of the university and 18 innovation clubs were established in the RCs all over India.

The main goal of her research is to advance the understanding of the need for innovations in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system and to identify and devise innovative interventions to improve the quality of the educational services. Her research work includes the study, documentation and dissemination of innovative practices in the ODL system.  She has carried out research studies to understand the perception of innovation among the teachers and students of the university. She has also carried out research on the use of information communication technology (ICT) tools for designing innovative solutions for teaching-learning and skill development. Her work also includes the capacity development of the students, faculty and staff members to train them to be creative and innovative individuals. She has conducted several training programmes on creativity and innovation, innovative use of ICT for the teachers, staff and students of IGNOU.

Before joining IGNOU, she was a Senior Editor, science publishing, at MacMillan, and a Research Associate at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi. She completed her PhD from the CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, affiliated to Lucknow University, and her post graduate and graduate degrees from Delhi University. She holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights from the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi.

She has co-authored four books that aim to pique the readers’ interest in things around us and prompt innovative thinking in them. She has authored a book on the medicinal, agricultural and industrial uses of the medicinal and aromatic plant Chamomile. She has written several chapters for the study materials of various Schools of Studies at IGNOU. She has written more than 50 research papers and articles, and has presented papers in national and international conferences.
