The Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE) was set up as the Division of Distance Education in 1986, soon after the establishment of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in 1985, to cater to the training needs of various functionaries of IGNOU and the ODL system in the country. Later, based on the proposal by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, and on declaration of DDE as Centre of Excellence in Training by COL, the Division of Distance Education of IGNOU was upgraded into the Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education (STRIDE) in 1993 with the aim of setting up a training and research institute for distance education in the South Asian Region.

STRIDE has been conducting training and research activities for IGNOU, State Open Universities (SOUs), other distance education institutes, and all higher education Institutions (HEIs) across the country, and has been involved in offering its long term capacity building programmes at the National and International spheres through its PGDDE, MADE, PGDDEOL and MADEOL programmes.
