Dr. Malathy A

Assistant Professor

Dr. Malathy A. joined IGNOU as Assistant Professor in 2005 and has been involved with language editing of study material, and development and co-ordination of courses of BA (General) and Post Graduate Diploma in Book Publishing. Currently she is developing courses for the BA English (Hons.) programme and an elective course ‘The Australian Novel’ for the M. A. English programme. Dr. Malathy A. also supervises PhD research in the English discipline.

A post graduate from the University of Kerala, Dr. Malathy A. holds an MPhil in D. H. Lawrence studies from the University of Nottingham, UK, and a PhD in Australian fiction from JNU, New Delhi. Her research focuses on possibilities of re-interpreting traditional Indian critical concepts for contemporary critical discourse. Her MPhil research attempted to develop a reading strategy by re-defining the ‘Tinai’ theory as outlined in the Tamil critical text, the Tolkappiyam, in modern terms. She is also interested in eco-critical approaches to literary texts to consider the intersections between the human and the non-human worlds. Her PhD research studied how the tensions between different ways of knowing and using the Australian land, derived from the ancient traditions of the Aboriginal communities and the Eurocentric settler perspectives, are reflected in fictional writings of Australia. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and published papers on these themes.
