As per Government of India (GOI) report on Human Resource for Health Sector, there is no ANM trained in Ayurveda Nursing so far therefore Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH), Government of India has planned to develop course for ANMs so that they can be certified to provide quality care to the patients undergoing
treatment under Ayurvedic System of Medicine.

Keeping in view the above and the vision and mission of Department of AYUSH, GOI, School of Health Sciences (SOHS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) took up the challenge in developing the Certificate in AYUSH Nursing (Ayurveda) for ANMs. Certificate programmes in Unani and Homeopathy will be developed later.

ANMs can provide basic health care in Ayurvedic System of Medicine after completing the Certificate in AYUSH Nursing (Ayurveda). As under NRHM Ayurvedic services are integrated in most of the hospitals, Community Health Centers, Primary Health Centres and Sub Centres all over the country.

Programme Objective

  • Discuss current issues and trends in Ayurveda;
  • Develop skills in giving nursing care to the patients under the treatment of Ayurveda system of medicine;
  • Develop understanding and depth in performing skills, keeping in mind the principles of various Ayurveda medicine; and.
  • Apply the knowledge of Ayurveda in various settings i.e., hospital and community
