                                                         Media Release
IGNOU to start Direct-to-home (DTH) soon

IGNOU has come as the major educational institution for Higher Education in the country by filling-in the gap and providing opportunities to thousands of those meritorious students who inspite of high percentages had failed to get admission in the conventional system. Till date, more than 1,22,000 students who have sought fresh admission, though the last date for admission is still 31st Aug. 2016 with a late fee.

More than 210000 students have re-registered for various programme and these figures are much more than the corresponding figures for the last two years. A unique feature is the admission of more than 37oo Navy personnel at Vizag Navy Regional Centre of IGNOU.

IGNOU offers admission twice in a year i.e., July session and January Session and has more than 3 lakh students on its rolls.

In addition to the multi-media facilities, MHRD has also given the responsibility of IGNOU for running four Direct-To-Home (DTH) channels, besides two other TV Channels that have been restored and will be on the air very soon.

A unique feature of learning process at IGNOU is the teaching and interaction with the faculty through interactive web-telecasting and interactive radio counseling, through the Gyanvani FM Channels.

The teachers of IGNOU directly interact and teach students now, through the IT learning tools.

The Learning Support Centres in the country include the most remote regions of Jammu & Kashmir, North-East and also the Western borders of India.

IGNOU has more than 3000 Learner Support Centres all over the country and operations in 9 foreign countries have restarted again, where IGNOU caters to a large number of NRIs and Indian Diaspora students.

Over the years since IGNOU launched its programmes in 1987, there has been a considerable change in the profile of students. Initially, it was believed that the ODL system caters only to those who had missed the opportunities of higher education. However, now it has been observed that IGNOU has many students who take the ODL system as their first choice of education and they simultaneously take up employment, besides, those who cannot make to the formal higher education institutions, opt for IGNOU programmes.

Its IGNOU only which provides opportunities to the Jawans of Indian armed forces who while serving our country in terrains like Siachen, can also go for higher education.

It has also been found that a large number of students who study in the formal system simultaneously take up Diploma & Certificate courses from IGNOU, particularly in areas like Tourism, Health Education, Human Rights, Consumer Protection, Disaster Management, etc.

IGNOU has kept pace with the innovations in the field of education technology and was the first country to start online programmes, though they are on-hold for the time being. At the same time, IGNOU hosts largest education portal ‘-Gyankosh’, and the same has been made available to the learners and teachers anywhere after a gap of two years.
