The main objectives of the institute is to provide training for the untrained teachers and continuous training for the in-service teachers in the North-East region through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode by using the multi-media technology.

The institute, that became operational in November 2009 addresses issues related to the professional development of the educators, such as developing ICT capabilities in teachers for utilising emerging technologies, inclusive education and imparting the vision and strategies for skill-upgradation of teachers in the N-E region.
