1. What is Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on behalf of the Government of India. This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhaar. Each individual needs to enrol only once which is free of cost. Each Aadhaar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life. Aadhaar number will help you provide access to services like banking, mobile phone connections and other Govt and Non-Govt services in due course. For more details please visit
2. What is IGNOU’s role in Aadhaar Enrolment?
IGNOU is a Registrar to UIDAI and has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect. As a registrar, IGNOU will offer facilities of enrolment to all its students, alumni, staff and their family members. IGNOU will also facilitate the enrolment of general residents. The entire population of IGNOU’s students across the country will be covered.
3. What is the procedure for Aadhaar Enrolment?
You can enrol for Aadhaar by visiting enrolment centers set-up at IGNOU's regional centers. For enrolments at the regional centers, you can go to the Aadhaar enrolment center with your identity and address proof documents. Please
click here for a nationally valid list of Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents. Common proofs of identity and address are election photo ID card, Ration card, passport and driving license. Even if you or someone in your family does not have valid documents, you can still enrol. If the head of the household has relevant documents, he/she can first enrol and then introduce others in the family while they are enrolling. At the enrolment center, please fill your personal details within the form. Alternatively, you can schedule an appointment by using the pre-scheduling an appointment option and uploading your details online. Your photo, finger-prints and iris scan will also be taken as a part of the enrolment. You can review the details you have provided and make corrections during enrolment itself. You will get an acknowledgment slip with a temporary enrolment number and other details captured during enrolment. Based on your information provided, your details will be verified centrally. If your application is successful, an Aadhaar number will be generated and mailed to your address normally within 60 to 90 days.
4. Where can I get enrolled?

7. I have already enrolled for Aadhaar, do I need to enrol again?
No. One needs to enrol for Aadhaar only once. If you have an enrolment ID/Acknowledgement for Aadhaar enrolment, please wait for your Aadhaar number to be sent to you. 10. Has Aadhaar enrolment been made a mandatory requirement at IGNOU?
No. However, IGNOU plans to use the UIDAI authentication services to integrate its services.
