Prof. Savita Singh is Professor in the School of Gender and Development Studies, IGNOU. She joined the School in 2009 as its first director. Currently, she coordinates the PhD Programme in Gender and Development Studies and Master’s in Gender and Development Studies in the School. She did her M.A and M Phil from Delhi University, following which she went to McGill University, Montreal, for higher studies. She wrote her PhD thesis on “Discourse of Modernity in India: A Hermeneutical Study” and earned her degree from Delhi University. She taught political theory as a research assistant at McGill University and in the University of Delhi (For more than a decade). She has got her works published both in political theory and creative writing. In Political Theory she has published “Discourse of Modernity in India” ( Occasional Paper, Centre for the Development of Areas Studies, McGill University, Supported FCAR Funds, Quebec, 1993); “ The Discourse of Modernity in India: The Hermeneutical Language ” ( The Journal of Political Science, Delhi University, 1998) ; “Three Languages of Indian Modernity” in Exploring Indian Modernities: Ideas and Practices , ed. Leila Chourkrone and Parul Bhandhari (Springer, Singapore, 2018): “In the Genre of an Intellectual Memoir: Randhir Singh as a Marxist Theorist and a Revolutionary Teacher” in Essays in Tribute to Randhir Singh, ed. Dhanajay Rai (Aakar Publications, Delhi, 2018) .
In creative writing she has published a number of books of feminist verse; Apne jaisa Jeevan (Radhakrishna Publication, Deli, 2001); Nind This Aur Raat Thi (Radhakrishna Publication, 2005) ; Swapna Samay (Radhakrishna Publication, 2013); Rowing Together( A Bilingual Collection of poems , Hindi-English with Sukrita Paul, 2008); Seven Leaves, One Autumn ( An anthology of Seven Women Poets from different Continents, 2010): je suis la maison etoiles ( A bilingual collection of verses, Hindi and French). Her poetry is part of academic curriculum of many universities including Delhi University and numerous students have done PhD and MPhil on her work (JNU, Delhi University) and so on. She has been translated in many Indian and foreign languages like Marathti, Odia, Gujarati, Maithili, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and Catalonian. She was part of the prestigious project, Poet’s Translating Poets, Goethe Institute, Mumbai under which German Poets translated her poems into German, published by Draupadi , Velag Press Heidelberg, Germany, 2016.
She has received many awards and fellowships for her work in both areas of her interest: Kirti Samman, Hindi academy for Apne Jaisa Jeevan, Raza Award for Nind This Aur Raat Thi, Hindi Akademy’s (Delhi) highest award for poetry, Kavya Samman and Mahadevi Verma Poetry Samman, Rajbhasha Parishad, Government of Bihar). She received a Foundation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH, Paris), a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship to work on Krishna Sobti’s two novels, Mitro Marjani and Ai Ladk in 2016. She received and completed a research Project on “Working Women’s Hostel”Ministry of Women and Child Development, GOI,( 2011-2014). The report is available on the website of MWCD.
She has been an Associate fellow of Centre for Developing areas Study (1986-89) and Developing Countries Resource Centre, Delhi University ( 2001-2008). She has been a member of Board of School of International Studies, JNU, Centre for Women’s Studies, Aligarh Muslim University (2010-2013; 2017 -2019), Scientific Advisory Group of Social and Behavioral Research Division of ICMR (July 2015), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development (Institute of National Importance), Sriperumbudur, Tamilnadu (2013), Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India (2010-2017).

Her areas of academic interest are, Feminist Theory, Epistemology, Aesthetics and Gender and labor.
